Mayor Larry O’Brien: crime rate down, safety up
Mayor Larry O’Brien welcomes today’s news that citizens of Ottawa are enjoying a greater sense of safety and security in their community.
In a report released today, Statistics Canada found that Ottawa’s crime rate decreased by 5.1 per cent in 2007, giving Ottawa the third lowest overall crime rate and the lowest rate of violent crime in large Canadian cities for 2007.
“I want to express how proud I am of the Ottawa Police Service, under the leadership of Chief Vern White, for their ongoing dedication to lowering crime in the City of Ottawa,” said Mayor Larry O’Brien. “As Mayor my goal is to ensure the safety of our residents and today’s report is a clear indication we are heading in the right direction.”
During the election campaign in 2006 Mayor O’Brien clearly identified improving public safety as one of his goals and will continue to work closely in support of initiatives to keep Ottawa one of the safest cities in the country.
“Through initiatives such as the Street Crime Unit we can see a marked improvement in our downtown core and citizens have expressed an increased sense of security,” said Mayor O’Brien. “I am delighted with the progress we have made so far and remain committed to working with the police and our community support organizations to sustain and improve safety in the City of Ottawa.”

Yes I am always pleased when City staff and management have success in achieving thier goals. Saftey and security is always at the top of my priority list and when progress is made I speak on behalf of all Citizens when I say; “Well done and keep up the great work!.”
But much more work needs to be done and the most encouraging thing I heard from Chief White is his committment to continue to continue to reduce our crime rates. With police walking the beats, special street crime units in operation and a healthy sense of renewed confidence the Police are doing a wonderful job.

I would like to know who you people define as residents! I was born here and I have never been safe my entire life. Oh, and ottawa is one of the safest cities in the coutry because most people are institutionalized.
