Details revealed on exciting downtown tunnel project

Today details were released on one of the most exciting projects in Ottawa’s history – the downtown transit tunnel.

The tunnel is a key component of the Transportation Master Plan, which was overwhelmingly approved by Council on a vote of 22-2 on Nov. 28, 2008. City staff updated Councillors on the Downtown Ottawa Transit Tunnel (DOTT) Planning and Environment study’s progress. During the briefing, Councillors were provided with further details on preliminary tunnel alignments and station locations.

“Council overwhelmingly supported this new transit vision and we are now taking some concrete steps to turn it into a reality,” said Mayor Larry O’Brien. “The downtown tunnel is truly an exciting project for our city and I encourage residents to get involved.”

The City of Ottawa also launched a website that includes background information on the project, highlights of the study’s scope and provides opportunities for the public to get involved in this exciting, once in a generation project. Given the importance of this project to the city, the site will provide the public and key stakeholders with the most up-to-date information on the tunnel study and ensure that they are engaged throughout the study process.

The first open house for the tunnel study will take place in January 2009, where the public will have an opportunity to review the preliminary tunnel alignments and possible station locations.

good not build it before i’m an old man. we need this to be build in the next ten years. please make this happen soon, its embarrassing they way things are now.

  2. Mike Says:

Who cares about this tunnel right now. Fix the transit strike and get the drivers back into their buses so that the people who rely on OC Transpo can use their services again.

  3. Steve Says:

    Larry,

This is wonderful, but seriously right now we need to get our transit system back up and running. All this hassle is really not making me very excited about this project.

It is alright to grin and bear things for a day or two but we are up to a week now.

Could we maybe at least make the some sort of offer that maybe leaves out the scheduling part in exchange for a savings in other areas of the contract. It is really frustrating not see any progress and the not to see the city making any effort.

Or maybe ask the feds to use back to work legislation or what ever else can use. Maybe ask Mr Baird or someone.

  4. Richard Baird Says:

This city had better not cave in to this band of thugs. Some of these councilors want to drop the no strike- no lock out clause in the contract. these are the folks that plow the streets and salt our sidewalks. If they were to strike it would be in the winter. How smart would this plan be? We can’t allow the unions to run the show. But, maybe we could get that idiot Clive Doucet to end this strike. He could write a poem.

  5. Robin Says:

    Steve,
That would be a great idea except that it would fail in the same way that declaring transit to be an essential service would in the areas of the fedral government seems to have more important things to worry about, as well as parliment is currently prorogued until January 25.

  6. Jason Boyce Says:

MAYOR LARRY - Before you start building a tunnel, don’t you think you should get the buses that will use them back on the road?

  7. Cass Says:

I know a lot of people are so upset about the transit strike that this tunnel development seems of little priority, but the fact is the OC Transpo strike will end eventually, and in the meantime we should take hope from this plan for the future of Ottawa transit. I read through the presentation on the downtown tunnel, and I have to say, it looks fantastic. Great job Mr. O’Brien! I simply can’t wait to take a ride in Ottawa’s first subway!

To Jason Boyce: the tunnel is for the trains, not the buses.
