World-class ideas for Lansdowne’s urban park

Today at City Hall, in partnership with the National Capital Commission and Parks Canada Agency, the City unveiled five exciting proposals for a new urban park at Lansdowne.

The design ideas, created by some of the world’s best landscape architects, are available to view on the City’s website and at several City buildings. Public comments will be gathered until May 31, 2010 on ottawa.ca.

After the public comment period, a jury of design experts and officials from the City’s partner agencies will select a winning design.

This is a great moment for the City of Ottawa and its partners on this project. As a Council we asked for the best ideas for a revitalized Lansdowne Park and now we get to see what some top talent in the field can create for this important heritage site in our capital.

The designs are on display at:

City Hall, May 20-23,

Lansdowne Park, May 24-26,

Ray Friel Recreation Centre, May 27-28,

Nepean Sportsplex, May 27-28,

Walter Baker Sports Centre, May 29-30,

Kanata Recreation Centre, May 29-30.

Together, we can revitalize Lansdowne Park and turn it into a stunning, awe-inspiring place that will attract Ottawans, Canadians, and people from around the world to our great city for decades to come.

In this case, there is nothing wrong with accepting the least expensive , option D.

It has all the elements needed . Combine it with Claiborne’s excellent design for the stadium, and hopefully a great design for the commercial component, and Lansdowne will indeed become a great place.

I rarely send in political comments but I can no longer be silent about the flawed process around developing Ladsdowne Park. I am appalled at the way this has been handled from the onset. This was never a fair, open process nor a proper public discussion. City Hall is entering into a for profit, business deal with gifted, public recreational lands. Lansdowne should be a park for public use and enjoyment as it was gifted. I do not live in the Glebe and even if I did, the glebe does need green space and they are correct in demanding it. I have a great solution but my unsolicited suggestions will never be addressed. I am only a taxpayer, called upon to pay for the cities endless bad decisions.

Tear down the concrete eyesore. How many times does Ottawa have to demonstrate that it is not interested, translate to will not by tickets, to a team? Plant grass and trees and flowers. Let people picnic, ski, walk and enjoy simple, undeveloped green space. We do not need more stores, it’s a bad place for a hotel and there are more than enough expensive condos being built. Everything about this deal and it is a back room deal, reeks from its very onset. Shame on the sleazy process. I read the agreement and it is appalling, only the developers are protected, receiving rights to prime land, free and with little if none, financial liability. This council and mayor have no right to give/sell this land. You were entrusted to protect it for public use and enjoyment and you are breaking that trust. I will keep a record of everyone who votes in support and they will never have my vote again for any public office. Shame on everyone involved with this.
