WOW, what a great response, Ottawa’s first Earth Hour last Satuday was an amazing success all due to your participation.

Ottawa Hydro is reporting a 4% drop in overall consumption started at 8:00 Saturday and the best part was that the conservation continued well after the hour was over.

Overall Canada had one of the highest participation rates around the globe with over 150 cities participating according to World Wildlife Fund Canada.

Thank you for participating and lets remember to continue to conserve throughout the year.

Tomorrow is Earth Hour

March 28th, 2008

Mayor Larry O’Brien reminds all residents to celebrate Earth Hour tomorrow Saturday March 29, 2008 from 8PM to 9PM by turning off all lights and non-essential electrical appliances .

Ottawa is joining other international cities participating in Earth Hour, a global event that encourages people to turn off their lights from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, March 29, 2008 as a symbolic statement on the need to take action on climate change.

Ottawa’s status as a capital city of a G8 nation adds weight to an already growing list of cities across globe including Chicago, Toronto, Copenhagen and Sydney, Australia.

The City of Ottawa is proud to lead the nation’s capital in the event and build upon our environment efforts including our success in achieving our corporate GHG emissions targets.

Hydro Ottawa is a major partner in Earth Hour Ottawa, and will be monitoring the drop of electricity used in Ottawa during the one-hour period. Already, many businesses and institutions have joined the rally including the Ottawa Chamber of Commerce and Algonquin College. And each day, more residents and businesses are adding their voices to amplify Ottawa’s call to support the need for action on climate change.
